MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Student safety and teacher empowerment will be two of Shawn Smith’s top priorities if he is elected to the Monongalia County Board of Education in next year’s election.
Smith formally announced his candidacy Monday (Oct. 30) for one of two board seats up for election in the May 14, 2024, primary. He would represent the Eastern District if elected. “I’m running simply because I want the very best for our students and believe I can make a difference,” said Smith, who has two children enrolled in the local school system. “This starts with providing a safe and conducive learning environment for our kids, equipping our teachers to do their jobs and listening to the concerns and suggestions of parents.” This is Smith’s first attempt at public office and hopes his candidacy will appeal to Monongalia County voters who want a fresh, simple approach. “I want to be a voice for the hundreds of parents in our county who are looking out for the best interests of their children,” Smith said. “My objective if elected is to bring that approach to every issue, every decision that comes before the board of education.” Smith said he plans to meet with teacher and parent organizations across the county in the coming months to listen to their concerns and suggestions. He also intends to meet with civic and governmental leaders to weigh their interests. Smith said he’ll then formulate a specific list of action items he would work to get accomplished if elected. Smith, 42, earned his bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University in industrial engineering. Since 2005, he’s been employed by Milliken and Company where he currently is a leader in the global company’s performance solutions consulting group. He currently serves as chairman of the WVU Statler College Industrial Engineering Visiting Committee, secretary of his local homeowner’s association, and a fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Smith, his wife, Brandy, and their two daughters, Khloe and Madison, are members of Kingdom: A Community Church in Westover where Smith serves as chairman of the board of stewards.
